Brothers and problem-solvers, Warren “Waz” & Mick keep QV1 running smoothly – from building maintenance to caring for the chickens on our rooftop Community Garden.
How long have you worked at QV1?
Waz: “All up, I’ve been part of QV1 in one way or another for over 30 years. I first started in 1992 with the cleaning team for a couple of years before CBRE brought me on as QV1’s maintenance officer. I did that for about five years, then shifted to part-time for another seven. Eventually, I decided to go out on my own — but QV1 was always so supportive that I never really left. I’ve been contracting back here ever since.”
Mick: “I first joined QV1 back in 2001 as part of the security team and spent about six or seven years keeping an eye on things before moving on. When Waz started his own gig, he roped me back in — and I’ve been working alongside him in maintenance for the last four years. It’s been a great run, but I’m hanging up my tools at the end of this year for a well-earned retirement. Don’t worry though, I’ll still be around to keep Waz on his toes from the sidelines!”
What’s it like working at QV1 together as brothers — and do you have any fun stories that stand out?
Waz: “We get along well — probably because we’ve got the same sense of humour. And look, we haven’t killed each other yet, so that’s something!
Mick: “One of our favourite stories has to be the case of the missing eggs in the Community Garden. For months, the chickens stopped producing, which made no sense. We added a latch to the coop, but still no eggs. Then we found a small access panel at the back of the coop where someone could sneak in and grab them, so we screwed it shut. Next inspection, one of the screws had been loosened — meaning someone was actually bringing in a screwdriver to steal eggs. It turned into a mission impossible-style cat and mouse game until the egg bandit was finally uncovered. The funniest part? We give the eggs away for free… all they had to do was ask!”
What’s your favourite thing about your role and the part you play in the QV1 community?
Waz: “What I enjoy most is the variety — no two days are ever the same. One moment I’m fixing something in the building, the next I’m up in the Community Garden. I also enjoy working with our tenants — there’s always a friendly smile, a wave, or a quick chat. That’s what gives QV1 its real sense of community, and it’s rewarding to know I play a part in that. Even the chickens are always up for a chat… though they never listen!”
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about your job behind the scenes at QV1?
Mick: “Most people see the polished side of QV1 — the lobby, the offices, the Plaza — but behind the scenes it’s a whole other world. Back of house, the place is buzzing with contractors, deliveries, security, and cleaners all working together to keep things running. It’s almost like its own little town back there — everyone knows each other, everyone has a role, and it’s all go, go, go to make sure the building runs smoothly.”
Outside of work, what’s one thing you’re passionate about or love doing?
Waz: I’ve always been fascinated by modern Japanese and Thai architecture and when I’m not looking at buildings, I’m usually with Max, my short-haired Border Collie. He’s full of energy and keeps me just as busy as QV1 does!”
