How long have you been part of the QV1 security team?

I first joined the QV1 security team over 23 years ago, but I’ve been working in security for more than 35 years. Before QV1, I spent 12 years at Central Park, so you could say I’ve done a few long stints in the city! This has definitely been my longest and most rewarding chapter.

You’ve seen QV1 evolve over the decades. What stands out most?

The technology, without a doubt. When I started, we were still using VHS tapes for security footage. Every night at midnight, we’d have to rewind the tapes and put new ones in, so we’d always joke, ‘Don’t try to break in between 12 and 12:05!’ These days, everything’s digital and far more advanced – from the cameras to the access systems. It’s made the job faster, smarter, and a lot more efficient.

After 23 years, what’s kept you here so long?

The people, for sure and the balance. The four-on, four-off roster gives me great work–life balance, and the management team has always treated us like part of the QV1 family. it’s also the variety of the role that keeps it interesting. No two days are ever the same, and there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that most tenants would never be aware of. That mix of people, and variety is what’s kept me and many of the other guards here all these years.

Outside of work, what’s one thing you’re passionate about or love spending time on?

Outside of work, my wife and I are really into geocaching. It’s taken us all over WA – and sometimes well beyond – hunting for hidden caches in places we might never have visited otherwise. It’s a great way to get outdoors, explore, and spend time together. Next year we’re heading to Tasmania for a big geocaching meet-up, so the adventure definitely continues.
