History

STILL THE OFFICE BUILDING BY WHICH
ALL OTHERS ARE JUDGED IN PERTH

QV1 is an iconic 43 storey modernist tower located at the western end of Perth’s most powerful street. Designed by internationally renowned architect Harry Seidler AC, QV1 was completed in 1991 after nearly six years in development and was the largest single building project in the CBD.

To this day QV1 remains one Australia's most iconic and beautiful office buildings. In Perth, no office building comes close to QV1 as a prestigious corporate address.

The Building History

Architecture

it's a great day when you go to work in a seidler designed building

The challenge for architect Harry Seidler AC was how to design a commercial tower that was aesthetically rewarding, yet offered maximum office space with spectacular views.

The simple philosophy behind QV1’s design was “Perth would have a humanistic building, as opposed to another monument to commerce”. That’s why a large portion of the site is dedicated to public open space – a rarity in the heart of any CBD. The focus of this space is the people’s plaza, a public oasis with a waterfall, palm trees and a meandering pool amidst a cacophony of city commerce.

Welcoming visitors to QV1 is an impressive fifty metre suspended glazed canopy, at the time one of the largest in the world, and a bright red Charles Perry sculpture. The imposing QV1 lobby with its 14 metre high ceiling, polished granite columns and black flooring with architectural detailing, lets visitors know they’ve arrived at a special destination.

QV1 has panoramic views of the Swan River, Kings Park and Rottnest Island through floor to ceiling double glazed glass walls. However, Perth’s long hours of sunshine meant unprotected glass would not be energy efficient. Verandas, common in Western Australia’s local residential architecture, provided the inspiration for the vertical sun shades visible around the external structure.

The lofty garden terraces dotting the outside of the building are rarely seen in commercial skyscrapers, even today, and mean tenants can enjoy the views and sunshine together. In QV1, Harry Seidler AC has simply designed the best combination of social and working environment imaginable.
